USA, 1959: Vincent Price (Frederick Loren), Carol Ohmart (Annabelle Loren), Carolyn Craig (Nora Manning), Elisha Cook Jr (Watson Pritchard), Richard Long (Lance Schroeder), Alan Marshal (Dr David Trent), Julie Mitchum (Ruth Bridges).
But, while that paid huge dividends at the box office, artistically Castle was not as gifted. Undoubtedly his entire career was commercially brilliant – he would later, as a producer, give birth to Rosemary’s Baby – but as a director of suspense he was so-so. Here, in House on Haunted Hill, the promotional device was Emergo, a skeleton flying over the theater at the same moment that a similar one was attacking Carol Ohmart on screen. But carnival spectacle aside, House on Haunted Hill is a fairly average film.
It’s a film that can be assessed in two ways: if you already know who William Castle was, you’ll find it super entertaining. For the neophyte, it’s so bad it’s laughable. I take a middle ground: Castle was a genius at selling a mediocre film like this. It entertains at times, but the plot borders on the fabulously nonsensical at times.

strait-jacket

In order to be safe and protect themselves from others, the guests decide to lock themselves in their rooms for the rest of the night. While in her room, Nora witnesses the ghostly apparition of Annabelle, who appears outside her window. Terrified by what she has just seen, the young woman runs off with a gun to the basement. It is later revealed that Annabelle faked her death with the help of Trent, her lover. His goal is to take advantage of Nora’s hysteria so that she accidentally murders Loren, thus inheriting his fortune. When Loren arrives in the basement, Nora shoots him and flees. After this arrives Trent, who tries to drag her body into a pit filled with acid.
Hearing the shot, Annabelle goes down to the basement in search of Trent, but finds it empty. At that moment a skeleton comes out of the acid well, speaking in Loren’s voice. As the skeleton approaches Annabelle, she runs away in terror and accidentally falls into the well. After this Loren, who was hiding controlling the skeleton like a puppet, appears. The rest of the guests arrive in the basement, where Loren tells them about Trent and Annabelle’s plan, and that to prevent it he put blanks in Nora’s gun. The host concludes by saying that he will submit himself to justice to decide whether he is guilty or innocent. Watson Pritchard, who still believes in the supernatural characteristics of the house, warns that the ghosts will come after him, and looking into the camera says, “and then they will come after you.”
