Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros. purchased in 2003 the rights to the biography of Neil Armstrong titled First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, written by James R. Hansen.[3] Later, Universal Pictures bought the film rights from them and decided to make the film under the name First Man.[4] In the film, a total of 1,000 people were used.
A total of three different formats were used throughout the film, 16mm, 35mm and full IMAX.[18] These were alternated according to technical and narrative needs.
